The Purpose of a godfather or godmother
Not everyone has a godmother or godfather, but if you do, you know how special that relationship can be. I was lucky to have a godmother who played a huge role in my life—until she passed away recently. Losing her has been difficult, but as I reflect on what she meant to me, I realize just how much she helped shape who I am today.
Here are four ways my godmother influenced my life:

1. Unconditional Love
There are few people in life who love you without conditions—your parents, maybe your grandparents. For me, my godmother was one of those rare people. She was there for every big milestone: birthdays, graduations, weddings. Whether it was through thoughtful gifts, deep conversations, or just showing up when it mattered most, she made me feel truly valued.
2. Companionship
My godmother didn’t live in the same country as me, but that didn’t stop her from being a constant presence in my life. Whenever I traveled to visit, she made sure I had a place to stay, food to eat, spending money, and most importantly—her time. She was my tour guide, my conversation partner, and someone who made me feel at home even when I was far from home.
3. Mentorship in Business and Life
She never married or had kids, but my godmother was a lifelong entrepreneur and an expert in business. She taught me how to recognize market trends, when to take risks, and when to walk away. More than that, she showed me the power of networking and how building genuine connections could open doors. Just watching her interact with people inspired me to be more confident and open to new opportunities.
4. Spirituality and Service
My godmother spent her days volunteering at a local temple, serving food to those in need. Even after she was diagnosed with cancer, she continued her work—going straight from chemotherapy to serve others until she physically couldn’t anymore. She showed me that while serving others, she was able to forget about her own struggles in those moments.
Her love, guidance, and example will stay with me forever.
